Mr. Insensitive


The Wall Street Journal reports: “AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby, raises more than $100 million a year, which it spends on lobbying politicians for U.S. aid and sending members of Congress to Israel”.

Anyone offended? Not yet? Only if facts are offensive to the hypersensitive. I’m OK with that. I suppose that might make me insensitive.

Look! Over there! It’s a Black Muslim woman speaking her mind!  "Pro-Israel" lobbyists and donors use their considerable financial resources to influence US policy - Politicians frequently profess ‘allegiance’ to Israel and expect others to do the same”.

Alert!  Shocking! Offensive! Now is the time for legislative action in the name of morality! 

Even in America, and in the House of Representatives, Black Muslim women must learn their place.

I mean, an unabashed white supremacist like Steve King can be excused. After all, he’s a white male Republican and con-servative. He proved to be politically correct enough to get reelected multiple times.  Never mind him.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. called for “action” against Rep. Ilhan Omar and her fellow Muslim congresswoman, Rep. Rashida Tlaib for criticizing Israeli policies.

On February 10th, Glenn Greenwald, a journalist and Jew, shared an article about McCarthy, adding the comment, “It’s stunning how much time US political leaders spend defending a foreign nation even if it means attacking free speech rights of Americans.”

But, look! It’s that Black Muslim woman again on twitter!  Ilhan Omar re-tweeted Greenwald: “It's all about the Benjamins baby”.

Oh, oh. Horrors! Alert! Make that “Terror Alert!!” That’s the last straw!

But wait.

Glenn Greenwald also tweeted on February 10: “Sorry, but you're not going to turn the two first Muslim women to serve in the US Congress into overnight Jew-haters because of their criticisms of Israel. What's actually anti-Semitic is conflating the Government of Israel with Jews, so those of you doing that should stop.”

Greenwald explains: Title 4 of S 1, the very first bill in the new US Senate introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio  would give states a legal blessing to punish companies that choose not to do business with Israel or Israeli-owned enterprises, a key demand of the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Twenty-six states have adopted laws that punish companies that choose to boycott Israel. Defenders of the law see them as necessary to protect an ally from hostile activists, while critics argue that the laws are unconstitutional infringements on free speech.

Two progressive senators were particularly outspoken in opposing the Rubio bill: Sens. Bernie Sanders and Dianne Feinstein. Neither of them has outright defended the BDS movement but instead attacked anti-BDS laws on free speech grounds.

“This Israel anti-boycott legislation would give states a free pass to restrict First Amendment protections for millions of Americans,” Feinstein wrote in a press release. “Despite my strong support for Israel, I oppose this legislation because it clearly violates the Constitution.”

It's become more "American" and politically correct to attack free speech than to link AIPAC with political donors and their money.

Now Omar is being smeared by every racist anti-Muslim bigot in the country for noting AIPAC's lobbying power and the Israeli far Right's influence on our government.

Not content to let the white nationalists have their orgy of racist attacks on a Muslim women of color, other corporatist guardians of morality and decency have joined their vitriolic chorus of condemnation.

This is something that the corporate media, the far Right, and the politically correct DC insiders all share. We see numerous Democrats and media elite seized in a pearl-clutching overreaction to a Black Muslim woman’s comments. Media and DC insiders allowed themselves to be aligned with the Right, as they savored their delight in expressing racism and anti-Muslim bigotry openly.

All because AIPAC and the Israeli government must not be questioned or criticized. And in conjunction, money can be invoked regarding any lobby, but one. Special dispensation for a special lobby.

This is a political correctness that allows a Muslim nothing to say about Israel or AIPAC. The same would be true of anyone deemed too critical of Israeli treatment of Palestinians, or in dissent of their abusive Right wing policies, or even interference in our politics and laws. That free speech is less tolerated than Steve King’s racism.

Many Jews, other than Greenwald, didn’t take Omar’s words as anti-Semitic.

Katie Halper writer, blogger, satirist and filmmaker tweeted,  "Jews like me are tired of @AIPAC claiming to speak for all Jews & conflating Jewish identity w/ unquestioning support of Israel, which is an antiSemitic trope." Me, telling Fox that criticism of Israel isn't anti-semitism & that @IlhanMN's critics are antisemites & Islamophobes”

The FOX(R) crew didn’t get it, of course, and had to “white-splain” how she was wrong. They even invoked the Holocaust, before Katie explained she had lost family back then.

Katie was also challenged by a Jewish woman named Rebecca:

Rebecca: “Jews like me are tired of Jews like you trying to prove you don’t have “double loyalty” by appeasing antisemites, and playing the ‘I’m a good Jew’ card.”

KH: “I'm not trying to appease anti-semites. I actually believe Palestinians are human beings. You should try it some time.”

There’s the problem. American corporate media’s political correctness cannot quite recognize the humanity of Palestinians. That would be called anti-Semitic by the Right. 

This disturbing tendency of corporate media dancing to the tunes called by the Right is also seen in their ready acceptance of Trump's endorsement of an un-elected president, and complicity with the neocon threat of military intervention in Venezuela. This failure of journalism and appeasement to the Right is a sad repeat of their submission to Bush and Cheney's lies about WMD's, "nukular" aluminum tubes, and Saddam's ties to al-Qaeda.

Now "our oil" is in Venezuela. 

“It will make a big difference to the United States economically if we could have American oil companies invest in and produce the oil capabilities in Venezuela.”- John Bolton

“That’s the country we should be going to war with. They have all that oil, and they’re right on our back door.” - Trump, according to McCabe.

Meanwhile, Katie wrote in an article for FAIR

If Congress were sincerely offended by antisemitism and antisemitic tropes, and not just hellbent on silencing a much-needed questioning of US support of Israel, they would have found a way to condemn Trump when he failed to mention Jews in his statement commemorating the Holocaust. They would have written a resolution condemning the use of antisemitic tropes when Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R.-Calif.) singled out Jewish billionaires George Soros, Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer as trying to “buy” the election—or when Rep. Jim Jordan (R.-Ohio) referred to Steyer as “$teyer,” and accused Jewish Rep. Jerry Nadler (D.-NY) of being funded by him.


But they didn’t. Because neither Trump, nor McCarthy nor Jordan ever talk about Palestinians. And it’s discussion about the treatment of Palestinians, not antisemitic tropes, that they want to silence.

Bernie Sanders had an equally sane comment as well.

"Anti-Semitism is a hateful and dangerous ideology which must be vigorously opposed in the United States and around the world. We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel. What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate. That’s wrong."

Israeli-American journalist Mairav Zonszein agrees:

“Read @IlhanMN tweet and honestly did not strike me as An antisemitic trope. Calling out AIPAC and Netanyahu is not calling out Jews, it’s calling out the actions of two entities who hold a lot of power and all those who serve that agenda”

I’ve had my hand slapped for simply wanting to discuss how we can criticize AIPAC and Right wing Israeli policies without being called anti-Semitic. My bad. I didn’t know the question itself was “anti-Semitic”. Again, I must be very insensitive.

At least Nancy Pelosi responded with some perspective to the Republicans demand that Omar be removed from committees. She un-clutched her pearls long enough to say, "No. A newcomer member of Congress has apologized for her remarks. It took them what, 13 years to notice Steve King?" 

Remember when Social Security was the “third rail” in politics? That’s history. George W. Bush tried to privatize Social Security, right after he was re-elected by a nation numbed and blinded by a war based on lies. Soon enough it would all come off the wheels.

So can we even condemn a man Israel's attorney general plans to indict? Or is calling the corrupt Netanyahu a crook "anti-Semitic" too?

I’m sure it is, especially to the cult that believes questioning Trump, AIPAC, and the NRA is un-American, and boycotting Israel should be punished by law.

Now, how are the Redskins looking for next season?

Of course, Dave. I'm truly surprised you didn't recognize that you've broached even mentioning one of the most valued "sacred cows" in American political strata (with no offense intended toward my Hindi friends).

The fact that mainstream Republicans and Democrats will not even allow a discussion about this distinction is very similar to the squelching of any conversation about any ideas other than the official conspiracy theory regarding what occurred September 11, 2001.

There are a number of sacred cows that one dare not look at -- much less discuss. To do so, one risks being turned into stone.

Of course we have to accept the official 9-11 line from the government of Cheney. Oh, but it's OK to parrot Trump's "9-11 dancing Jersey Muslims". The rule is "Don't question Republicans or a government of Republicans".

Corpo-Dems and media quickly fell in line for the Bush/Cheney 9-11 whitewash and war based on lies. It was un-American to question them. That would be "siding with the terrorists".

This is happening again with Venezuela and Iran. We don't dare question the Right and media's saber-rattling. That's a sacred cow in our military corporate empire.

There is no room for moral grounding or respect for truth in our corrupt corporatist empire.

Another sacred cow of corporate media is their stern warnings against Democrats "moving too far left", but there's no such thing as "too far Right" for Republicans.

More forbidden sacred cows in corporate media and politics would be the terms "Neo-liberalism" and "corporatism". Can't go there either.

A corporatist empire needs a herd of sacred cattle in order to herd their sheep.

Absolutely. It's sort of like a symbiotic relationship, actually. The sacred cow herd can't exist with a questioning and educated citizenry, hence more sheep are needed to legitimize the sacred herd.

On the other hand, the sheep wouldn't exist if the sacred cows were not consistently held to a indisputable standard and allowed to be questioned and critiqued.

Of course it's disingenuous. They aren't here to discuss anything in good faith. This is an article about AIPAC that doesn't mention taxes or AOC, but they go in that direction in an effort to derail and hijack the conversation?

I'm "interested" in JTF's "opinion" on AIPAC and their lobbying efforts and sway over powerful Americans. I'm interested in so much that I'll cut and paste their response into Google and see where they cut and pasted their "opinion" from.

Also, on topic to the post- I find it funny in a head shaking with my hand on my forehead kind of way that the same people concerned about a House Representative's Not-at-all anti-semitic Tweets aren't concerned about the President of the United States calling "some" of the people in Charlottesville that chanted 'The Jews will not replace us' fine people. The hypocrisy would be hilarious if it wasn't so naked and tired.

It's not like JTF's ilk will openly gloat about how corporate media and hyper-sensitive corpo-dems reacted to a reasonable tweet. They savor the wedge issue victory, custom-fitted to their interests.

They're just going to keep voting for Steve King and Trump's agenda. They delight in accusing those who call out real racism as the "real racists", as long as they aren't Republicans.

They care nothing about American Jews. Their only concern with Israel is it's ancient Christian history, and setting for their Armageddon/Rapture fantasies.

As long corporate media keeps regurgitating their accusations, and unilateral definitions of terms, the debate is already rigged. Their strategy is to define any criticism of any Right leaning organization as anti-Semitic, racist, or unpatriotic.

The NRA, AIPAC and CPAC are sacred to them. Those daring to disagree will be smeared from every angle.

None of these represent the majority of Americans. It is their version of "identity politics". For corporate media and far Right purposes, it's a term, that for some reason, only applies to the Left and Democrats.

Gotta hand it to the Right. They are masters at deflection by dictating definitions and terms for discourse through media manipulation. This is how they agitate anger, blame and hate.

The mainstream media MSNBC etc. has been running with this bulls--t for 4-5 days now or since she made her statements. They didn't spend 1/2 as much time on Steve King's racism and hate. They keep trying to push a divide in the Democratic party and smear Rep. Omar. I haven't agreed with Israel's treatment of the Palestinians for years.

Then again, I'm not able to consume the news from every available outlet considered mainstream, so I may be missing what you're picking up on.

The US has had long term sanctions and embargoes against Venezuela, and has now taken to seizing their oil revenues. The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela is similar to the humanitarian crisis on the border in that Right wing policies of the US Government exacerbate both. The "president" the US recognizes was NOT elected.

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed the Keystone XL pipeline for leaking about 5,000 barrels of oil in rural South Dakota about two years ago.

There’s just one problem: The Keystone XL pipeline has not been built yet.

During a House hearing Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez claimed that “Keystone XL, in particular, had one leak that leaked 210,000 gallons across South Dakota” while she questioned Wells Fargo president and CEO Timothy Sloan.

More AOC Derangement Syndrome?

Let’s ask “Tim Apple” about word slips. AOC misspoke the "XL" part. This infuriates racists, I'm sure.

Nov 17, 2017 - (CNN) A total of 210,000 gallons of oil leaked Thursday from the Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota, the pipeline's operator, TransCanada, said.

Just like AOC forgot to omit the final two letter designation, JTF “forgot” to mention this from his article he selectively copy and pasted:

Ocasio-Cortez probably confused the Keystone XL pipeline with the Keystone pipeline, which has been operating since 2010... The existing Keystone pipeline, however, was responsible for leaking up to 9,700 barrels in South Dakota in 2017.

So what was JTF's point, apart from expressing his hate for the brown woman who word-slipped and added "XL"? It seemed important enough for him to mention, for some reason.

He seems to be doing his best to show us he hates black men and brown women... That's our boy.

Dave, I was listening to the Thom Hartmann Show yesterday when he related how Michael Cohen's testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee included Cohen's belief that should Trump lose his bid for reelection next year that there would not be a peaceful transition of power.

In the wake of that testimony Trump granted an interview with Breitbart News, where he said the following:

While biker thugs have not sworn to uphold the Constitution, federal law enforcement and the military have. If some remain loyal to the Big MAGAt over the Constitution there will be conflict among them.

We may well see some Alex Jones zombies and militia nuts provoking violence. And they certainly will, if prodded by the authoritarian Criminal in Chief.

But this country's owners will likely own the next Senate, and possibly the next president, too, so they will get their way after some ugliness, bullying and threats from Trump's Last Stand.

He needs to locked up for this country to even begin to reclaim any moral foundation and rule of law. And I doubt that will happen. The next president will choose to "look forward" like Obama did for the war criminals.

I'm concerned the President, just like in 2016, is going to perpetually beat the 'It's rigged!' drum throughout the campaign in anticipation of losing. Nevermind the fact that all the individual States and territories would all have to collude together in order to "rig" the Presidential election, or even just enough to get the Democrat to get the majority in the Electoral College. Ridiculous conspiracy and serious projections considering how the President got to be where he is.

I'm comfortable that our Military will remember that they swear allegiance to the Constitution, not to the Commander-in-Chief. And the Police? The Police are not Federal agencies and I'm sure as hell not believing the D.C. Police are ready and willing to prop up a Former President who rejects the peaceful transfer of power when he loses. If he's talking about the FBI... his attitude and actions towards them throughout his Presidency sure isn't something I'd expect to elicit extra-Constitutional loyalty.

I'm fearful of what the President tries to do when he loses more than what will actually happen. I'm also interested to hear from the T.Paines of the world if and when it happens vis-a-vis all the talk of tyrany throughout the Obama years. I expect a lot of "Well I didn't vote for Trump." as if that stopped them from being so hyperbolic while also not having voted for Obama.

Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Unemployment, Roads, Firefighters, Police, Production of clean water, Food Inspectors, The Military, Border Security, TSA.... man, what a hellscape we live in with all this Socialism running rampant. I'm sure the JTFs of the world would prefer living on the street when they get sick, get old, or lose their job. In a rational world I'd probably agree with you. Military types, however, are trained to follow orders. I doubt whether they'll be flipping through their handy pocket-sized Constitution for legalities.

Donald Trump also swore to uphold the Constitution - as did all Congressional office-holders - but it's apparent Republicans are satisfied with subverting Constitutional law when it suits their corporatist agenda.

I framed my question around the scenario from Thom Hartmann's show the other day, namely whether he'll vacate the presidency in a peaceful transfer of power.

But look again at Trump's Breitbart News response where he says:

What does Trump have in mind with his words, "until they go to a certain point" and "then it would be very bad, very bad"?

Who is "they", what is "a certain point", and what is he saying, exactly, when he recites it would get "very bad, very bad"?

Maybe Vern knows. He's definitely tuned into the dog whistles of the alt-right.

Nobody is debating T. Paine. Noting his absence and theorizing the reason why he no longer wishes to engage in discussion is not "debating".

Which dictionary is "the dictionary"? And which of the multiple definitions of socialism to use? Fabian, Democratic, Marxist, Syndicalist, Christian,...etc?

There are no states of "pure" capitalism, communism or socialism. Each term embodies a vast area of economics and governing. Fascism stands as the most "pure" of the ideologies due to the power of a supreme dictator. Communist dictators operate from the fascist mold.

Democratic Socialism with regulated capitalism is the most moderate and successful realizations of these diverse ideologies.

My working definition of socialism is outlined in the Declaration's "consent of the governed" and in the US Constitution.

Exhibit A: Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

Exhibit B: US Constitution

Section 8
The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

Elements of both socialism and capitalism can work in a democratic republic. Representative democracy provides for the consent of the governed. Democratic Socialism is maintained by consent of the governed, taxes for the general welfare, and regulation of commerce to curb the abuses of unregulated capitalism.

There you have it. The liberal agenda. Consent of the governed, regulated commerce, and provision for the general welfare right there in the founding documents.

If Just the Facts wants do demonize socialism, he will need a very narrow definition that borders on that of a dictatorial, anti-democratic, one-party communist state.

And as we all know, that would be deflection.

Let's see if he can comprehend any of this.
