I have a confession.
I
voted for a Republican once.
It
was for Gerald Ford.
I thought he was a decent guy and unlike Nixon, relatively honest. I had misgivings about Carter because a Southern Baptist in the White House didn't appeal to me. I suspected he would inject evangelicalism into our government.
Of course, he proved to be one of the most honest and decent presidents we ever
had. He didn't impose his religion on us, but acted in accordance to his faith.
We don't see that in today's Christian Nationalist MAGA crowd.
After
Ford pardoned Nixon, that was the end of my voting for Republicans.
I
didn't trust Ronnie "Aw Shucks" Reagan at all, and I was validated by his October Surprise deal
with Iran for holding the hostages until after the election.
Iran/Contra
told me they would stoop to any lie and betrayal of our country for power.
Since
then, I have vehemently opposed the Republican Party. Union busting and tax
cuts for the rich told me exactly where they wanted to take our country.
The
"Reagan Revolution" resulted in the rebirth of the Confederacy and
imposition of corporatocracy in disguise. The age of the Economic Royalists had
returned.
I
have no resentment for those who voted for Republicans in the last century, but I
was disappointed and a bit perplexed when they voted to re-elect Bush after he lied us into war. I will blame FOX News more than them.
I
even tolerated friends and family after they voted for Trump in 2016. Barely.
But
after 2020 and 2024, they only drew my disrespect and revulsion for their
obvious lack of critical thinking, vacuous values, indifference to truth, and tolerance
of indecency, blatant lies, and criminal conduct.
I
still welcome any remorse they show for supporting Trump and will forgive them
if they finally wake up. Otherwise, I cannot forgive the racists, greedheads, dupes, and willfully ignorant true believers who support the most vile, corrupt, and
criminal occupant to ever sit in the Oval Office. I cannot abide any ideology that so gleefully inflicts pain and suffering upon non-violent people they happen to hate.
As
far as I'm concerned if anyone supports Trump's Big Lie, criminal election interference, and his pardons and rewards for his J6 thugs, they are the worst of us who deserve only scorn and contempt.
These MAGA loyalists are the racist and bigoted authoritarian ilk that would have been
loyal Nazis in 1930s Germany.
It's time for Americans to wake up and smell the fascism. I can only hope it's not already too late.
