Democracy Or Republic?

“The US isn’t a democracy. It’s a republic.”

How many times have we heard this from election-denying insurrectionist liars?

Of course, like ALL authoritarians, they claim the right to unilaterally define terms and their own delusional views of reality.

Orwell noted that the destruction of language is a totalitarian propaganda tactic. In “1984”, the Party’s Thought Police inquisitor O’Brien explains to Winston Smith between torture sessions, “It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words...Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? Orthodoxy means not thinking - not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

“Fake news”, “enemy of the people” and “Arbeit macht Frei” (Work sets you free.)

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” – The Party (1984)

“Just remember, what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what's happening.” – Trump

Historian and author of “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present” Ruth Ben-Ghiat writes in “What Happens to Language When Authoritarianism Takes Hold: Resist the Perversion of Language and the Destruction of Meaning”,

So, authoritarians turn language into a weapon, as well as emptying key words in the political life of a nation such as patriotism, honor, and freedom of meaning. We are well on our way in America to what I call the "upside-down world of authoritarianism", where the rule of law gives way to rule by the lawless; where those who take our rights away and jail us pose as protectors of freedom; where the thugs who assaulted the Capitol on Jan. 6 are turned into patriots; and where "leadership means killing people," as Tucker Carlson put it recently, justifying Vladimir Putin's killing of Alexei Navalny.

This is why authoritarians like Trumpists, neo-Nazis, autocrats and tyrants HATE the very word “democracy”. That implies acceptance of election results, even when their Dear Leader loses.

Let’s go back to the “US isn’t a democracy. It’s a republic”, lie spewed by the Trump Cult. Why is it a lie? The definitions of those terms tell us it’s a lie.

American fascists need to REJECT established definitions and replace them with THEIR false meanings.

Any time a Trumpist tries to gaslight us we need to immediately call them out.

“Democracy” comes from Greek for “rule of the people”.  “Republic” comes from Latin for “rule of the people”. They are synonyms.

Here are the accepted Merriam-Webster definitions that fascists don’t want you to know:

Democracy:

1a: government by the people especially: rule of the majority

b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

2: a political unit that has a democratic government

3 capitalized : the principles and policies of the Democratic party in the U.S. from emancipation Republicanism to New Deal Democracy— C. M. Roberts

4: the common people especially when constituting the source of political authority

5: the absence of hereditary or arbitrary class distinctions or privileges

Republic:

1a(1): a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president

(2): a political unit (such as a nation) having such a form of government

b(1): a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law

(2): a political unit (such as a nation) having such a form of government

While we’re at it, here are a few other handy definitions to counter the radical Right lies and gaslighting:

Merriam-Webster- Coup d'état: a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics, especially the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group.

Merriam Webster- Terrorism: the unlawful use or threat of violence especially against the state or the public as a politically motivated means of attack or coercion

(FBI) Domestic terrorism: Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.

Definitions matter. The essential meanings of words are on the front line in our resistance to tyranny. Don't let them weaponize language by destroying it.

Chuck Schumer is trying to interfere in Israeli elections from the floor of the Senate...Democrats like to complain about foreign interference in our own elections here in the US, but apparently it’s okay when they want to interfere. TYPICAL DEMOCRATS.

The off topic deflection from Anonymous will be his final published comment.

And since when is calling for an election "election interference"? And why doesn't Anonymous object to foreign interference in OUR elections? He's no patriot.

And one little thing, Aside from the stolen secret documents, ALL OF TRUMP'S CRIMES are ELECTION INTERFERENCE.

Nice try, Vern.

The truth is what you see, what you hear, and what you think is relative reality. Reality conditioned by all the many societal, parental, school, peer, and other inputs etc. IOW, we believe in large part what we're conditioned to believe.

Actual, or absolute reality is something not accessible to most human beings. It is possible to realize absolute reality, but it takes years of training and is not something the consumerism addicted Americans would be too interested in. So they suffer.

Senator Schumer however is spot on with his analysis of the Butcher of Tel Aviv, Benjamin Netanyahu. It's time the genocide of innocent Palestinians is stopoed. Something the Bucher has no intention of doing.

Dave Dubya said...

Point taken. Some realities are quite easy to grasp and prove, though.

Like Trump is an authoritarian asshole. Racists support Trump. Uneducated bigots support Trump. Neo-Nazis support Trump. Trump lost. Trump lied. Trump criminally tried to steal the election, etc.

Only indoctrinated dupes, the willfully ignorant, and authoritarian sociopaths reject these realities.

Most Israelis are fed up with Netanyahu as well. He's just another crooked authoritarian like Trump and Putin.

Dave Miller said...

Re Schumer...

As the Majority leader in the Senate, his calling for elections in Israel is, in my opinion, interference in the election process of that country. I'm no fan of BiBi, but as soon as I heard what Schumer had done, my thought was election interference.

If a foreign leader publicly favored one US candidate over another, we'd say the same thing. Indeed, some have said so regarding Trump's spooning the other day with Orban.

Sometimes even the off topic trolls can be right, just like a broken clock.

At least IMHO...

Excellent post. You should post this at WYD. It might get through to a few of the Trumpers there. Might if you tell them Trump wrote it! LOL!

Wait. Even THEY know Trump is incapable of that sort of intelligent explanation.

Dave Dubya said...

Dave,
Schumer is doing nothing like the covert misinformation and interference from Russia on behalf of Trump. He's not telling Israel who to choose for Prime Minister.

The US is essentially paying for Netanyahu's war. He has a 19% approval rating in Israel. I think Schumer is trying to say Netanyahu doesn't OWN US, and is working to de-escalate the war, more than he's interfering with an election.

I'd also say calling for an election is quite different from interfering in one. It's an opinion by sponsor.

I'd also say this is nothing compared to the Israeli Right's AIPAC and their $millions worth of interference in OUR elections, to the point even our presidents need their approval.

Shaw,

Thank you. I've already received a few deflections from our Trump lovers. I don't think they bother to pay the least attention to anything we write. They already know all they need to know...whatever Trump tells them.

Humans are social animals. Always looking for belief systems to aquire that mirror their own. The result of course are many tribes of belief systems, all which are simply constructions of someones mind. Wether for good or ill.

The problems with belief systems is they tend to become solidified and reified. Even in the face of evidence demonstrating their negative energies and results.

The attachment to, and reification of belief systems results in untold suffering across the globe. And yet humans continue to repeat the same foolish actions and mistakes over and over again. Without ever bothering to realize that simply accepting life and reality as it unfolds relieves human suffering.

Constantly fighting to change what naturally is into something one wishes it to be is the source of most of humankinds suffering...

Slow down... breathe... everything one needs is found within... nothing of real value is found external to us... certainly not freedom and liberation.

It's what dictators do.

Trump’s secretary of defense from 2019 to 2020 Mark Esper reminds us, “He wanted to deploy active-duty troops on the street of Washington, D.C., and suggested actually that we shoot Americans in the street. That's kind of more of what you'll see.”

Anyone who supports the enemy of our democracy who said, “Well, Hitler did a lot of good things," and “If I don't get elected, it's gonna be a bloodbath. It's going to be a bloodbath for the whole...that's going to be the least of it. It's going to be a bloodbath for the country,” Is a duped fool, or a goddamn neo-Nazi sociopath.

Believing Hitler's lies was what made Germans Nazis.

Believing Trump's lies is what makes Americans neo-Nazis.

Les Carpenter said...

Again, cause and effect.

Not making the effort at realizing the potential effects of the actions one (or the nation) is about to take before taking them is the result of a lack of wisdom and compassion.

Actions born out of ego protection are actions of suffering and ignorance.

Trump suffers greatly from his ego driven ignorance as well as causing great suffering for others.

This nation is suffering under the combined weight of great ignorance and insatiable greed. Both are ingrained charater traits of Trump and the majority of the gop. Democrats are certainly not free of ignorance or greed. They just seem to have more folks who understand the dangers of both and are less apt to to fall full prey to either.

Hey Dave...

Regarding Schumer and his speech regarding Israel...

Let me admit that I took the headlines at face value regarding what he had to say. I went back and read the actual speech, all 6000+ words of it.

It's a remarkable speech. Measured, thoughtful, full of what any leader of jewish descent would struggle with and on point.

His stuff about elections was really only part of the entire speech.

I'd encourage everyone to read it, then rethink positions.

Here's the link.

Full text of Schumer's Speech

Dave Dubya said...

Thanks, Dave.

I agree. Schumer spoke the words that needed to be said:

"Right now, there are four major obstacles standing in the way of two states, and until they are removed from the equation, there will never be peace in Israel and Gaza and the West Bank.

Those four major obstacles are:

Hamas, and the Palestinians who support and tolerate their evil ways.

Radical right-wing Israelis in government and society.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."

The world needs to understand the other major obstacles standing in the way of peace and a two state solution.

Religions and ancient tribal land claims.

Until Palestinians are no longer being driven from their homes and terrorism abates, the hate that fuels the conflict will continue to burn. BOTH sides need to evolve past ancient religion/land feuds and learn how to live with each other in mutual respect for rights and justice.

As America's endless struggle with racism keeps proving, the bigotry and hate from political and religious authoritarians are next to impossible to eradicate.

Netanyahu is doing his best to corrupt their justice system. He is their Trump and needs to go. The same for Hamas, ISIS, al-Qaeda, Trump, and Putin. And while we're at it, the same for the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, the Klan, and the rest of MAGA America. ALL of them are threats to peace, stability, and democracy.

Dave Miller said...

Dave, the four obstacles Schumer listed are pretty significant.

I'd love a reasonable discussion with some folks on those four points, but alas, many on the other side of the question choose to rant and rave rather than form cogent thoughts and ideas.

Maybe because it's just easier to rage type stupid misspelled word salads than think about hard ideas, nuance and real solutions.

Dave Dubya said...

Dave,

History's lessons are being ignored.

The media doesn't want to talk about WHY the Middle East is such a mess. They love to do their "both sider" schtick with American politics, but DREAD blaming both sides for Israeli land theft, apartheid, terrorism, the Palestinian Nakba and GAZA holocaust.

Schumer was a breath of fresh air compared to the far Right election interference machinery of AIPAC and their lock on pro-Israeli Right corporate media bias.

Just as WWII had it's roots in the rise of Hitler and German reaction to the armistice and Treaty of Versailles, WWIII might have its roots in the creation of Israel and its radical Right blood-thirsty reactionaries and the radicalized Palestinians it spawned.

If one were to write a manual on how to start an ethnic/tribal/religious war and trigger a world war, that would have been Chapter One.

If there are "two sides" I blame both. I have nothing but sympathy for the innocent victims trapped in the madness. I applaud the courage and compassion of all Arabs and Jews who are calling for peace. I'm on THEIR side.

But it's not that simple anymore. I blame Hitler's Holocaust AND the creation of the state of Israel first. It all goes back to those "two sides". The road to this hell was paved by BOTH bad and good intentions.

Les Carpenter said...

Gosh, we should have just ask the folks of Rhode Island if they wouldn't mind vacating the state so it could become the state of Israel back in the day when we shoved Israel down the throats of people who have hated them for thousands of years.

Of course that wouldn't have worked either. Thee is no simple solution. But leveling Gaza and killing another 31 million innocent Palestinians isn't either.

There is plenty of blame to spread around. Beginning with Hamas, Hezbollah, Israel, as well as the US and its allies.

The only lasting solution must be grounded in mutual respect, trust, compassion, and love for all of humanity.

What is the likelihood of the above ever happening as long as Netanyahu, Abbas, Hamas, Hezbollah and other like people and organizations remain stubborn and intransigent in their approach to an acceptable solution for all? Little to none i'm afraid.

Dave Dubya said...

Les,
It all comes down to humanity's ability to evolve in conscience, consciousness and compassion.

The unholy darkness of bigotry and hate entwined into politics, authoritarian leaders, and religion stands against our evolution towards enlightenment.

Les Carpenter said...

Yep Dave. And, there are plenty of people across the globe who are wired into materialism, greed, hate, and ignorance. America has its MAGAt's and the facist right is well entrenched elsewhere on the planet. I cannot help but doubt whether humanity on this planet survives another 250-500 years.

Dave Dubya said...

We are an amazing species gifted with brilliant minds with evolved intelligence, but still subject to primitive emotions that can destroy what civilizations and progress we build.

Democracy survived cultivation from the ancient Greeks, through dormancy in the Middle Ages, to revival in the age of Enlightenment. It would bring Western democracy to its greatest potential.

Now democracy has hit a dead end, where Wall Street and Christian white nationalism are joined against it. Authoritarian leaders leverage these forces into seizing minority rule, which requires the constant triggering of the fight/flight response in the amygdalas of their authoritarian followers.

We need a new enlightenment based on the needs for survival of our species. Anger, fear and hate are the path to self-extinction. Consciousness, conscience and compassion are the path to evolution and survival.

Humanity is at the crossroads. Evolution or extinction. It seems to be playing out at both the micro and macro levels. My money is on us being a failed species. We seem to be at the end of our ability to evolve and self-extinction has a number of scenarios in the works. It's just a matter of time. I fear your estimate in years might be generous.

At any rate, it seems democracy is at the brink and tyrants are rampant and unchecked.

"You don't have rights. You have owners."

This is the "Freak Show" George Carlin told us about. And being Americans, we have front row seats.

A ray of hope from Hungary.

"In Hungary, Scandal and Crisis Suddenly Energize the Opposition"

The Orbán regime’s hypocrisy and corruption have created a new star, Péter Magyar.

https://plus.thebulwark.com/p/hungary-orban-scandal-crisis-peter-magyar

THE STORY BEGINS WITH a presidential pardon last April. The identity of persons pardoned by the president in Hungary are not released to the public. But in this case, a technical publication of Hungary’s highest court accidentally referenced the pardon and it was noticed by a small-town lawyer, who forwarded the information to the independent media.

The recipient of the pardon—referred to in the press as Endre K.—had been convicted for covering up acts of pedophilia while working in an orphanage situated only a few miles from Viktor Orbán’s hometown.

This could give Hungary a chance to dump Orban. I guess the only line tyrants can't cross now is pedophilia. I'm sure MAGAts would be happy to overlook it with Trump.

Les Carpenter said...

I find it telling that the very group one would think would be fiercely opposed to trump and the autocratic mentality of the gop would be Evangelical Christians. But we find them giving 72 million in support of the rapist, misogynist, insurrevtionist, lying trump. So much for the moral high ground of christianity.

The path to further enlightenment of society has been blocked by our cultures wide acceptance of marerialism, greed, and ignorance. The greater our drive for wealth and the desire for constant self gratification at the expense of others lies at the heart of our unraveling existence.

We are the planets most vociferous parasites and its most accomplished predator. We continue to prove it with ugly pride every single day.

Humanity is writing its own obituary and we seem to be totally unconcerned. We are, and will continue to receive, exactly what we deserve. The path to extinction.

We've been writing this obituary since our ancestors climbed down from the trees Les. Throughout our history so many became leaders through brutality. We rarely remember the good. We never forget the terrible. Tamerlane is famous for his butchery. Had his commanders collect human heads and had a mountain of around a hundred thousand of them piled up. I think we all subscribe to some Machiavellian belief of ends justifying means. To be surprised that 72 million people adore a guy that makes them feel good about ignorance and hate would be the real surprise. It's a shame that the magats are such pansies compared to dissidents in the old days. Bad mouth Tamerlane and you lose your head. Bad mouth Trump and all you get is a mean tweet. I guess they feel they need to hand together or they will get mean tweeted separately.

Dave Dubya said...

Dave,
I'm hoping the pedophile scandal is out of the bag, so even if the whistle blower is killed the scandal will be more publicized. At least in countries that still have a free press. Trump would do his best to minimize or suppress it.

Joe,
Yes, and the imminent "end times" have been hanging over us for over 2,000 years as well.

Like our early ancestors, our modern brains are still susceptible to the primitive signals from the amygdala, and evil actors know just how to trigger them. Evolution of consciousness, conscience and compassion that would advance us beyond this type of primitive conditioning is our only real hope. A new enlightenment is what we need, but a new dark age is still ascendent.

Now we have those fanatics and their wish-fulfillment fantasies of Armageddon joining the threats of climate, global war and nuclear holocaust catastrophes.

Humans need to evolve, or extinction is guaranteed.

Bad mouthing Trump can result in anything from a mean tweet to death threats from his cult.

Trump would be a Tamerlane or a Hitler if he could. This is what his "immunity" claims are setting up.

Les Carpenter said...

Perhaps all that, and more, is why i turned to Tibetan (Mahayanna and Vajrayana) Buddhism Joe. The only spiritual path and practice that has ever resonated with me. There must be a reason.

Les Carpenter said...

Thank you for bringing it up again Dave. If it is still in print i shall most definitely aquire a copy. Add it to my growing list of neccessary Buddhist texts to read.

Well, lets see. I believe there have been three prior cataclysmic events that have visited the planet. None that were the result of human activity or habitation. I believe the next will fall directly on humankind's shoulders. We have disrespected our planet greatly, much as humans have disrespected each other. So, by our own hands we will determine humankind's fate.

The good news would be left alone the planet will restore itself to all that it once was. If its luckly human life won't regenerate. Or at least not in its current form with its present DNA.

The real question is this. Why are MAGAts such white supremacists and RACISTS?

Obviously funding the border with over a thousand new officers and adding fentanyl detectors isn't important to Republicans, since they obediently followed Trump's order to KILL THE BILL, just so he could us the border as his campaign issue.

So clearly it's not an urgent matter, compared to Trump's own agenda to avoid jail.

This leads to a couple more questions.

Why do MAGAts LOVE a criminal traitor? Why do they love Russian agents in Congress, as Lev Parnas revealed in the Clown Show Impeachment hearing?

It has come down to Trump and Putin v the Democratic Party and the US.

So who REALLY HATES AMERICA?

Anonymous said...

It is quite obvious who hates AMERICA. Trump, the gop, and Putin. The three forces zeroed in on destroying democracy and the democratic republic our founders passed on to us. They will not rest until they succeed. And of course the RCC and the Evangelical church will support the autocratic authoritarians all the way. Until they too are of no more use to them and then they too will be kicked to the curb or under the bus.

America has NOT been in this much danger of destruction from within since the Civil War. Anyone not sensing the nefarious intentions of trump and the gop simply do not want to. Whatever their foolish reasons.

Aerschig said...

"Republic" comes from "res publica," which means "public affairs," not "rule of the people".

Dave Dubya said...

Aershig,
Thank you for the etymology. I don't know where anyone said "res publica" means "rule of the people".

The point being both "public" and "demos" are rooted in the Latin and Greek terms for the people, and the radical Right refuses that common meaning by insisting on their fallacy that the US is a republic and not a democracy.

I provided the accepted definitions of terms for reference. I noted how tyrants and the radical Right will unilaterally assume authority to define or re-define terms.

More from https://www.dictionary.com/e/democracy-vs-republic/

The word republic is first recorded in English 1595–1605. It comes from the Latin rēs pūblica, meaning “public thing,” characterizing that a state is ultimately run by its people—as opposed to monarchy or tyranny...

So, is the United States a democracy or republic?

For all practical purposes, it’s both. In everyday speech and writing, you can safely refer to the US as a democracy or a republic. If you want or need to be more precise in referring to the system of the US, you can accurately call it a representative democracy. And should you need to be exacting? The US can be called a federal presidential constitutional republic or a constitutional federal representative democracy.

What you should take away in the confusion (or debate) over democracy vs. republic is that, in both forms of government, power ultimately lies with the people who are able to vote. If you are eligible to vote—vote. It’s what, well, makes true democracies and republics.

Aerschig said...

"I don't know where anyone said "res publica" means "rule of the people"."

Actually, you did, in the post:

“Democracy” comes from Greek for “rule of the people”. “Republic” comes from Latin for “rule of the people”. They are synonyms.

You're right that a republic in the modern sense is a type of democracy, so to call something "a republic not a democracy" is nonsensical. But the Latin "res publica" which is the root of it, meaning "public affairs", was more similar in meaning to the modern word "politics". It didn't imply democracy, though in practice the Roman Republic did have democratic elements.

Dave Dubya said...

Thanks for clarifying my rough translation, Aerschig.

Latin and Greek are still "Greek to me".
