Unlearned Lessons

Another Veterans Day has come and gone, each time seeing fewer remaining veterans from World War II.

We are appropriately accustomed to thanking them for their service, but we rarely discuss why they fought.

My father-in-law earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star when he served in Patton's Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge and liberation of Buchenwald. He saw the end results of unchecked fascism.

Those inmates were all "enemies of the state", enemies of the “Deutshce Volk”, (German people). They were communists, socialists, educators, non-heterosexual people, and members of the wrong religion/heritage.

Even if someone wasn’t in any of those groups, he could still be labeled an enemy of the people and sent to the camps. The “law” allowed this.

Every atrocity the Nazis committed was "legal". The Enabling Act of March 23, 1933 allowed the Reich government to issue laws without the consent of Germany's parliament, laying the foundation for the complete Nazification of German society.

Echoes of Hitler's racist fascism are now ringing across America. As with the Third Reich, the resentments and anger of white nationalist bigots have fueled the rise of the radical Right and Trumpism.

We're on the precipice of a one-party dictatorship if voter rights are not protected and gerrymandering is allowed to continue.

This is the party that still supports a leader who calls democrats communists. He calls the press the enemy of the people. He makes scapegoats of immigrants and minorities. He rose to power by fueling racism and hate.

The leader is a criminal sociopath who incited a violent coup and praised the mob of thugs for their efforts.

His party of radical Right American fascists constantly employs propaganda tactics to portray liberals, Democrats, Socialists, educators, atheists, immigrants and minorities as repugnant and evil as possible. They deliberately cultivate resentment and hate for them in their white nationalist supporters and duped base.

They organize and stage a coup, attempt to bully the Justice Department and state officials to overturn an election, plot to kidnap a governor, threaten congress and political opponents, threaten election officials, engage in vigilantism, and openly intimidate others by brandishing weapons.

They seize power to suppress voters, nullify elections, ban books, and ban teaching the history of racism and slavery.

His party is getting away with it all. See any parallels here?

This is fascism.

Never forget these crimes against freedom and democracy.

Let’s also not forget our Constitution didn't prevent Bush from starting a war based on lies, locking people up without charges, and implementing torture.

And always remember the US Holocaust Museum list of the early warning signs of fascism:

1. Powerful and continuing nationalism
2. Disdain for human rights
3. Identification of enemies as a unifying cause
4. Rampant sexism
5. Controlled mass media
6. Obsession with national security
7. Religion and government intertwined
8. Corporate power protected
9. Labor power suppressed
10. Disdain for intellectuals and the arts
11. Obsession with crime and punishment
12. Rampant cronyism and corruption

This is radical Right Republican Trumpism, folks. And it is fascism.

Too many Americans fail to see this ongoing domestic threat to our republic, and fail to learn the lessons of history. Either American fascists are held accountable by the rule of law, or there will be no rule of law to constrain the authoritarian party of Trump.

If the rule of law doesn’t apply to the rulers, there can be no rule of law, and no democratic republic, and the future will certainly be further darkened by American Radical Right fascism.

I guarantee it.

One of my favorite quotes by George Orwell is this: “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.”

All of what you wrote about is happening in front of our noses. You and I and many others see it. We're aware of history's ability to repeat its fatal mistakes because people keep looking away from what's happening in front of their noses.

I'm NOT optimistic for our country. The fact that Trump has conned so many millions of our fellow Americans is why.

You reminded me of what I like about Orwell’s conclusion on fascists, from his 1944 piece, “What is Fascism?”

"By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come."

Brilliant! I must have read that but forgotten it.

Examples of bullies in the Trumpublican Party abound. Just look at what's happening in school board meetings, anti-vaxxer and pro-Trump rallies. And the extremists in that extreme party are not afraid to say the quiet parts out loud -- including speculating about killing Democrats.

The the Democratic party seems to have been taken over by a bunch of Emotional IDIOTIC people with their latest rage of nitwits who want a Sex Change. In case you haven’t noticed it yet, but the Newest, and Latest rage of these Moronic Screw-Balls, is to become Transvestites.
Wherever you go these days, Tansies seem to be in the headlines. the difference between a Transvestite and a Transsexual. The former does it for fun and recreation -- the latter does it for "keeps"..
The biggest thing is that young people feel so disconnected due to the complete political insanity going on is a Sex Change.
The fact that since there are so few Real Trans people, compared to “Normal people”, makes being Trans “abnormal”. It may be normal to Trans people. But not to to what we know as “normal people”.
In a democracy, majority rules. And we the majority rule Trans people as being weirdo's
Lots of Transvestites who don’t fit into the LGBTQ fashionable agenda.

Today, beingTrans is a Fad and nothing more. I'd bet that less than 5% of Tansies are doing it for Fad reasons.
They do it because they want to Feel Special and Unique and Different. They feel they get special attention for it. They grew up with parents constantly telling them they are special unique people that are awesome and fantastic. As they grow they become less so, so they do it in order to continue feeling that way.
The media Glorifies Tansies also helps feed the fires. They see being Trans glorified in the news and how the Political Weirdo’s in the Democratic party loves their Tansies so they want to be in on it. Also Kids love to be troublemakers, and rabble-rousers, as they see Trans people "being brutalized and degraded" and they want so they join the cause just so they get to feel like they are doing something truly important..also Kids are usually pretty stupid and will do what other kids do so they can feel apart of something

Progressive Hunter,

Greetings to a fellow progressive hunter. I use a 12 gauge Remington pump for small game and a vintage Winchester 94 for deer.

Or are you implying you have terrorist tendencies and want to kill progressives?

Either way, I can see you are sharply focused on what gets under your skin the most.

Kids these days, amirite?

I can't identify with those people who disgust you, but I do feel sorry for them for their unfortunate predicaments and the bigotry they face.

I'm more of a live-and-let-live kinda guy.

Like you, I also support majority rule with minority rights.

Those Democrats are something, aren't they? They started out as rebellious slave owners, then Southern Jim Crow politicians. A few decades later they sponsored jobs and public works during the Great Depression that was set up by irresponsible greedy Wall Street Republicans.

Next thing you know they were called communists, despite the fact they were capitalists. Later they gave us the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts for the descendants of slaves, with the help of Northern Republicans. Today all Republicans would rather not stoop so low as to promote bipartisan equality and voter rights.

And now, because they tend to represent Blacks, and support Constitutional taxes, regulation of commerce, and provision for the general welfare, Democrats are once again called communists.

I can't blame you for your need to obsess on those individuals with identity issues. It makes it easier for the "us vs. them" tribal feuding.

Good hunting, but keep it legal. No poaching.
